Interested postdoctoral candidates should contact Joanna with a cover letter describing your research goals, interest in our research, and a current CV. Highly motivated individuals with a recent Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D., a background in biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, and molecular biology, as well as a first or co-first author publication, are encouraged to apply. All lab members are expected to apply for fellowships as part of their training.
May 2026 we have an open position. Apply online here: https://unc.peopleadmin.com/postings/318679.
Prospective graduate students should apply through the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP) at UNC.
Please email Joanna if you are a current graduate student interested in rotating in the Kovalski lab. The lab will be taking rotation students for the 2026-2027 academic year and has at least one open position for a graduate student.
We welcome UNC undergraduates with the expectation that they will devote at least 2 years of research in the lab. During the school year, students are expected to devote at least 10 hours a week to being in lab, including group meetings when possible, and should consider a full time summer research experience. Undergraduates should be actively engaged in biology coursework to provide a solid foundation for their research in the lab. Please reach to Dr. Kovalski about the possibility of starting in the lab.
The Kovalski lab is located on the 3rd floor of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (32-020).
Dr. Joanna Kovalski's office is next to the lab 32-016.
